Zoot Suit

Zoot Suit: This play from the assembly of the National Theatre Company of Mexico talks about the conflict of racism and intolerance suffered by Mexicans and Latinos in Los Angeles, California, during the 40’s.

This musical work of Luis Valdez, inspired by the murder trial Sleepy Lagoon and the confrontation between North American police and young Mexican guys in the USA in the 40’s, calls attention to discrimination against Latinos in the United States.

Zoot Suit was released in Los Angeles in 1978 and today is the highest grossing work presented in that city. Such was it success that in 1979 became the first play to reach Broadway.
National Company of Theatre of Mexico
It was created in 1977 and restructured in 2008 by his artistic director Luis de Tavira. It has a cast of 47 actors and its plays are based principally in the universal heritage of theatre, new theatrical tendencies and the Mexican theatre.
It has released around 14 plays, in which Ni el sol ni la muerte pueden mirarse de frente, Edip en Colofón, Ser es ser visto, Horas de gracia y Desazón, are highlighted. These plays will be presented in the “Teatro Estudio” as part of the Contemporary Mexican season.
